Summer on the Water (Rondeau)
Nathan DeBar
issue one.
My feet form around the hospitable sand in anticipation of flying from land.
By my side is a dentist’s daughter
who never strays from her pauper
despite him saying things she doesn’t understand.
Taking my cigarette in her hand,
she gives me a silent reprimand,
as I notice her eyes grow warmer
in the southern heat.
The dentist’s wife turns on an ’80s band whose style had fallen from demand
and who was playing when I first saw her
as she touched my heart with her laughter which was impossible for anyone to withstand in the southern heat.
