Talking to Birds
Lou Ventura
issue three
I teach the birds my language.
I place my mouth close to the head of a sparrow
my lips brushing against its feathers.
I whisper exactly what I’m thinking
about the noises in the street
and the static in my head,
and I send it on its way,
to have a voice outside my own,
in a language we both can understand.
