Screen Door
Laura Dennis
issue five
the slam of a screen door
that squeaky creak
old tired spring that
doesn’t care anymore
a sound of summer
at the lake
running out of the house
down to the dock
diving into the cold clear water
screaming and laughing
jewels of water caught
in your curly dark hair
the tired door
always announcing itself
stealth required
to sneak away
on a hot star-filled night
walking along the shore
my hand in yours
our lives before us
planning our future
now walking down my street
the sound reminds
me of you and
that last summer
the last slam of the door
as you left
